Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from August 5, 1993 to September 18, 2020. She was previously a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, from June 30, 1980 to August 9, 1993.
Her father, Nathan Bader, was a Russian Jewish emigrant, born in Podolsk. Her mother, Celia (Amster), was born in New York, to Polish Jewish parents. She was married to taxation law expert Martin D. Ginsburg, until his death, with whom she had two children, attorney Jane C. Ginsburg and music producer James Steven Ginsburg. Her grandson is actor Paul Sperra and her nephew is screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman, both of whom worked on the film On the Basis of Sex (2018), about Justice Ginsburg.
